Villages and Castles of Romagna
A few kilometres from Misano, you can immerse yourself in the history and culture of a glorious past. The medieval villages and castles of the Romagna hinterland are numerous, and each tells a different story, full of charm and emotion.
For example, at the Rocca di San Leo, the spirit and magic of Count Cagliostro, an alchemist and heretic who is said to have died within these castle walls, still lives on. Gradara, on the other hand, captivates its visitors with the timeless legend of Paolo and Francesca of Rimini, while Montebello Castle is home to the tale of Azzurrina, a child who mysteriously disappeared in 1375 and who is thought to still make her voice heard every summer solstice.
And these are just some of the castles you can visit in Romagna. Because your holiday in Misano can be about research, history and discovery.
EVENTS AND HISTORICAL RE-ENACTMENTS
In summer, the Romagna villages and castles come alive with beautiful historical reenactments, great entertainment events to experience the glory of our past firsthand.
For example, the Palio del Daino in Mondaino, touches on medieval arts and crafts, and the town dresses in ancient attire for an entire weekend, with artisan workshops, markets, and tastings of period products.
The Siege of Gradara Castle, on the other hand, recounts the story of the Sforza siege of Gradara Castle in 1446, becoming not just an accurate historical reenactment but rather an engaging live docudrama that concludes with a spectacular burning of the Fortress.
SIGISMONDO MALATESTA, FELLINI AND TONINO GUERRA
Romagna is famous for its characters and some of these have left a mark, a sign and indelible memories.
The oldest character is Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, whose story lives on in Rimini, 20 kilometres from Misano, where you can visit the recently restored Castle and the Malatestiana Temple.
Federico Fellini, decidedly more contemporary, sealed with his Amarcord Rimini's history in the 1930s and a wonderful exhibition dedicated to him at Castel Sigismondo retraces the stages of his astonishing career. Finally, in Santarcangelo, the memory of Tonino Guerra lives on, a poet, writer, screenwriter, and artist to whom the city has dedicated a museum.
